Somna · Last updated September 11, 2026

Somna has no backend server, no account and no sign up. Your sleep data (sleep and wake times, estimated stage breakdown, scores and goals) is stored on your device. Nothing is sent to us, and nothing is shared with third parties or advertisers. The one exception is the nightly summary you may choose to share with a person you invite, described under Sharing with a partner below, which travels through your own iCloud rather than through us.

Apple Health

If Apple Health integration is on, Somna reads and writes sleep data only to compute your sleep score and keep your Health app up to date. Access is requested when you first start a night, not when the app launches, and you can decline it. Somna does not upload Health data anywhere. It has nowhere to upload it to.

Camera

If you set up an object wake mission, one reference photo of the object you chose is stored on your device to match against at alarm time. Live camera frames used for that matching are processed in memory on the device using Apple's Vision framework, and are never saved or sent anywhere.

Microphone and snore detection

Snore detection is off until you turn it on. When it is on, Somna listens only between the two taps that start and end a night. It does not listen at any other time. It measures loudness on the device and keeps a short audio clip of each episode so that you can hear it yourself. Those clips are stored only on your device and are deleted automatically after 14 days. No audio and no analysis result is ever transmitted. Somna measures loudness only. It does not diagnose sleep apnea or any other condition.

Your household

You can add a partner and children as members so that each person gets a sleep goal appropriate to their own age. The name and date of birth you enter for a member, and that member's sleep records, are stored on your device alongside your own. This information is not transmitted to us, and it is not included in anything shared with an invited person beyond the four values listed below.

Sharing with a partner

Sharing is off until you tap Invite. If you turn it on, Somna uses Apple's CloudKit sharing through your own iCloud account, not through a Somna server, because there is none. Only four values per night are shared with the single person you invite: the date, how long you slept, your score and your goal. No name, no audio, no photos, no Health records and no data about other household members are shared. You can stop sharing at any time from within the app, and doing so removes the shared record.

Profile information

The age, height, weight and sex you enter in your profile are used only to calculate your personal sleep goal, and never leave your device.

Children

Somna is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from them. A parent may add a child as a household member, but that information is entered by the parent, stays on the parent's device, and is never transmitted to us.

Deleting your data

Because everything is stored on your device, deleting the app removes your Somna data with it. Snore clips are deleted automatically after 14 days regardless. Sleep data you previously wrote to Apple Health is managed in the Health app, where you can delete it separately.
